Press release: The armed forces of Côte d’Ivoire will be sensitized to the prevention of mass atrocities

9 March 2021
The African Coordination of Human Rights for Armies (CADHA) with the support of the Raphael Lemkin Center for Africa (CERLA) and the support of Global Action Against Mass Atrocities (GAAMAC) will sensitize the armed forces of Côte d'Ivoire on best practices for the establishment and management of national mechanisms for genocide and mass atrocities prevention.

PRESS RELEASE
Geneva – Abidjan – Yamoussoukro, March 5, 2021

The first workshop for 60 officers will be held in Yamoussoukro from 9 to 10 March 2021.

This campaign aims to increase prevention capacity in Africa and beyond through the dissemination and ownership of the Manual on Best Practices for the Establishment and Management of National Mechanisms
for Genocide and Mass Atrocities Prevention developed by the GAAMAC Africa Working Group.

West Africa has experienced its share of mass atrocities. In the current post-conflict context, Côte d’Ivoire is strengthening its efforts and aims to use legislation as a means of fighting such crimes and preventing the risk of atrocities.

The workshop will inform officers on international and national criminal justice, on the main articulations of the code of ethics and military deontology. Participants will also be trained on the basic concepts of Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law, on the rules and principles of international criminal justice and on the principles and respect for the rule of law.

The opening session on March 9 will be attended by senior representatives of the Republican Guard and the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Côte d’Ivoire, as well as Ambassador Liberata Mulamula, Patron of GAAMAC’s Africa Working Group.
