Press Release: Government and civil society agents receive training on mass atrocity prevention

Geneva/Nairobi, 31 May 2022 – for immediate release. The Kenya National Committee on the Prevention of Genocide, War Crimes, Crimes against Humanity and All Forms of Discrimination (KNC) with the support of the Global Action Against Mass Atrocity Crimes (GAAMAC) will train twenty-two government and civil society agents on mass atrocity prevention on 30-31 May 2022 in Nairobi at Gracia Gardens Hotel.

This two-day workshop will bring together a team of representatives from state and non-state agencies with a mandate on the electoral management. Participants will learn about, and help disseminate, the GAAMAC Africa Working Group’s Training toolkit on mass atrocity preventionUltimately, it should increase the awareness of the KNC, civil society and the government national atrocity prevention mechanisms and early warning mechanisms.

Justice Jamila Mohammed, Chair of the Africa Working Group of GAAMAC, rejoiced of this activity: “Each State should have adequate mechanisms to permanently prevent mass atrocities. This workshop brings Kenya one step closer to that goal.”

Ms. Nancy Ngumba, National Coordinator of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, will inaugurate the opening ceremony. A keynote by Justice Jamila Mohammed, KNC Chairperson and Chair of the GAAMAC Africa Working Group, will follow. The workshop will include simulations, the development of action plans and culminate with action planning for ways forward.

The Global Action against Mass Atrocity Crimes (GAAMAC) is a global inclusive network of States, civil society and academic institutions that aim to support States in establishing national architectures and policies for the upstream and permanent atrocities prevention. As a platform, GAAMAC convenes its diverse community in-person and online to share good practices, to jointly learn from successes and failures without pointing fingers and to look instead for concrete and feasible solutions.
