Geneva – Abidjan, March 4, 2024

For immediate release

Members of the Ivorian National Gendarmerie and the media to be sensitized to the prevention of mass atrocities

Following the first forum of the GAAMAC Africa Working Group (AWG) held in September 2023, the African Coordination of Human Rights for the Armed Forces (CADHA) with the support of the Global Action Against Mass Atrocity Crimes (GAAMAC) will sensitize 25 journalists and 30 gendarmes to enhance their skills in the prevention of genocide and mass atrocities on March 5 and 14, 2024 in Abidjan.

West Africa has seen its share of mass atrocities. In the current post-conflict context, Côte d’Ivoire is stepping up its efforts to use legislation as a means of combating such crimes and preventing the risk of atrocities, drawing inspiration from the models of the countries of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region.

The opening sessions will be chaired by the Vice-Chair of GAAMAC’s Africa Working Group, and will be attended by representatives of authorities and diplomacy.
